Online Craps Guide

The casino craps game was first brought to America in the 18th century, when French gamblers introduced the game to New Orleans while Louisiana was still a French territory.

Today, craps is an extremely popular casino game because of its simple premise, relatively good odds, and large number of bets. Many players particularly enjoy online craps because of how easy it is to join in, and how suitable the online platform is to the fast pace of the game.

How to play online craps

Many new gamblers over the years have undoubtedly been intimidated by the fast-paced action found at craps tables. Thankfully, online craps casinos – by their nature, with no onlookers – come without these intimidating factors. But to get started, it’s important to know the very basic premises of the game.

Craps is played around a racetrack-shaped table that accommodates multiple players. The game is centred on the roll of a pair of dice. Bets are placed before and after these rolls. In fact, one of the most appealing elements of craps is the huge number of bets that are available (more below). Some of these bets have the best odds that you will find in the entire casino, which is another great appeal of the game.

If you are already familiar with the layout of an actual craps table, you will be able to navigate online play quite simply, the only difference really being that you’ll need to click chips from your stack, instead of physically placing your bets. You also won’t physically throw the dice, but rather “click” them into action.

Playing online casino craps is simple, and each game will come with a rules or information section to help you out, if needed.

Recommendations for playing craps online

When choosing to play casino craps online we recommend the following:

  1. Find the best craps casino with a good setup. Ideally the casino will have favourable odds for common bets (see our recommended craps casinos above).
  2. Make sure that you have a sufficient amount of money on the site in question to play craps. Check the casino’s betting limits to be sure.
  3. Before deciding to play at a craps table, take some time to familiarise yourself with the elements of the interface. Make sure that you know where most of the important bets are, and how to use the system for placing bets and rolling the dice when it is your turn to shoot.
  4. Spend some time checking out what usually happens when different craps events take place. For example, how are you notified when the shooter hits a seven on the come-out roll?
Have fun!

What are the best bets in craps?

Before you decide to start playing online craps, it is important that you understand the variety of bets available. One of the main reasons that so many players are intimidated by the game of craps is the large number of bets that can be placed. All in all, there are over 40 different kinds of craps bets.

Fortunately for beginning players, there are a few common bets that are easy to grasp. The most common bet is known as the Pass Line bet in which you place your wager on the area of the table that is marked ‘Pass Line’, and based on the results of the first “come out” roll you either win, lose, or another roll takes place.

Pass Line bets are popular because they are easy to understand and have good odds. In fact, the house edge on a Pass Line bet is only 1.4%, which is much lower than some other common casino games like slots or roulette.

Another common craps bet is the Don’t Pass bet. This bet is most easily understood as the exact opposite of the Pass Line bet. When you make a Don’t Pass bet, you put your money on the Don’t Pass Bar, which is directly north of the Pass Line.

Besides the Pass Line and Don’t Pass Line bets, the other common craps bet is often referred to as the Free Odds bet. This bet takes place after the come out roll, once the point has been established. To make this bet you simply need to place money directly south of the Pass Line. This bet is valuable because it has no house edge. Your odds are established based on the true odds of the dice.

Other common craps bets in regular and online play include:

  • Come and Don’t Come bets
  • Place bets
  • Proposition bets

There are lots of other bets available, but if you are new to the game we recommend that you learn and try them out gradually.

 Bottom line

While it may seem complex at first glance, craps is a fun game that is actually easier than it seems. With some basic information and a few rounds under your belt, you will be well on your way to playing this exciting, fast-paced casino game with great odds – and enjoying it!
